“Involving Youth in Sustainable and Peaceful Development in Indonesia” Friday 28 – Sunday 30 June 2024, Yogyakarta
The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Indonesia Office (FES) organised the first alumni meeting of the Young Progressive Academy (YPA) in collaboration with the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture (Kemenko PMK) in Yogjakarta. The two main objectives of the conference were on the one hand to involve young voices in the dynamics of reflections and responses concerning the sustainable and peaceful development of Indonesia. On the other hand, the foundation stone for an alumni network was to be laid. The meeting was attended by alumni of the first two years of the YPA from almost all provinces in Indonesia.
The conference aimed to open the space for innovative and solution-orientated thinking for the Indonesian future. During the conference, a whole range of issues that young people in Indonesia find pressing were discussed. These include for instance gender equality, climate justice, participation in political decision-making processes and the education system. In all of these topics, it emerged that there is still room for improvement in the inclusion of marginalized groups and youth voices in particular.
In order to tackle these challenges together, the participants adopted a roadmap for the establishment of a YPA alumni network. This informal alumni network is intended to support the exchange between socially committed individuals who are interested in progressively shaping the future of their country.
As part of a fishbowl discussion, the attendees had the opportunity to exchange views directly with experts on what they saw as pressing issues. Three experts with different thematic backgrounds from Indonesia and Vietnam took part in the discussion to initiate mutual learning processes.
Ms Lian Gogali emphasized during her digital participation the special role that young women play in establishing and maintaining peace in her home community of Poso in Central Sulawesi. With her Mosintuwu Institute, she promotes the important role that women can play in preventing violence.
In his remarks Mr Dody Wibowo made clear that education and peaceful coexistence are directly linked. He emphasized the importance of peace starting at the individual and local level. Accordingly, he sees his mission as supporting the young generation in their personal development, in order to become increasingly committed to peace in the future. With this in mind, he believes that peace education must begin in the classroom.
In her contribution, Ms Hai Linh Nguyen highlighted the best practice example of the Vietnam Youth Parliament (VNYP), whereby young Vietnamese have a concrete impact on political decisions in Vietnam. The VNYP has already been able to contribute to positive change at the level of the population in Vietnam through climate education understanding and awareness.
The experts agreed that social change always begins at the local level, but must also be reflected in political decisions in the long term.
