Social Security & Welfare State

As an organization dedicated to social justice, FES views the state's role in providing basic needs, including social protection, as essential to a welfare state. Since its inception in 2014, Indonesia's National Social Security System (SJSN), managed by BPJS, has aimed to offer comprehensive protection through health insurance, employment injury, old age provident fund, pension insurance, death benefits, and job loss insurance. FES, in collaboration with Kemenko PMK, other government agencies, and civil society partners, is committed to strengthening Indonesia's social security system.

To achieve an inclusive society within the framework of a welfare state, a fundamental paradigm shift is necessary at the societal level. This transformation must focus on supporting community groups in need of protection, empowerment, and rights fulfillment. Accordingly, FES, in collaboration with its partners, is dedicated to targeting women, children, and youth through programs that engage directly with these communities, ensuring that the principles of a welfare state—such as social protection and equity—are effectively realized and contribute to meaningful social change.

Strengthening the National Social Security System

FES supports studies on various topics with the JKN (national social security programs) to review and enhance policies for expanding outreach within the JKN program. First, to assess the public health services through PBI (aid recipients) membership program. Second, preparing the provincial government to provide at least 60% of beds in the standard class (JKN KRIS) and identifying the possible challenges. Third, integrating social security content into education, providing a systematic approach and roadmap for incorporating social security into curricula, serving as a primary resource from basic to higher education.

Empowerment and Fulfilment of Rights of Women

Creating a gender just future is the ultimate goal. Being the patriarchal country, strong focus and affirmative actions for women in Indonesia remain an important approach. FES support studies and training dedicated at the role of women in health and population management, as well focusing on care work that falls under the responsibility for women for so long. During the times of crisis, women and children become directly impacted. FES is supporting a policy dialogue to advocate for protection of women and other vulnerable groups.

Awareness Raising for Elderly and People with Disabilities

Being economically and socially vulnerable group, the rights-based approaches acknowledge the rights of elderly and people with disabilities to access basic services and decision-making. FES is pushing for empowerment as well as working on Inclusive social protection for Persons with Disabilities and elderly, while continuing with awareness campaign for the fulfillment of the rights of persons with disabilities and the elderly.
